Review: Brian May joins My Chemical Romance at the end of their sexiest set yet as Reading Festival 2011 day one draws to a wet, but triumphant close.
Initially, Gerard Way (resplendent in tight Top Gun-esque leather) has no excuse for his blatantly sexy gasps, wiggles and gyrations that would put Beyonce to shame. Striding seductively through a set comprised mainly of material from recent album Danger Days and more than a few crafty crotch shots, the message is simple and rather R rated: girls, eat your hearts out.
This message is relayed through rather tiresome renditions of Sing, Famous Last Words and Dead as the simplistic lyrics give off a boy band for the disaffected feel, but all is to be forgiven by the encore as the first chords of ‘We Will Rock You’ ring out. An awed crowd watch a rather taciturn Brian May take the stage alongside Gerard-Way-Cum-Freddie-Mercury for the hit tune, and for closer ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’.
