ARTICLE: The Worst Music Fans of 2013 (excerpt)(WARNING: negative content)

"My Chemical Romance fans - This year the band behind "Welcome to the Black Parade" finally called it quits after at least six years of irrelevance. Apparently there were still stragglers hopelessly dedicated to the band, though, and it incited responses like the ones above. Hysterical sobbing and waiting endlessly for the band to return.

The worst though, and it seems to have been mostly scrubbed from the walls of Tumblr, was the hordes of people who started threatening suicide over the band's breakup. Come on, people. It's just a band. Life is bigger than music, believe it or not.

Then there was this.

Yeah, sorry mrsstylesswaggy, that is totally not okay..."

NEWS: My Chemical Romance announce details on greatest hits,"May Death Never Stop You"

My Chemical Romance have revealed details of their upcoming greatest hits album, May Death Never Stop You, and revealed that the record will include previously unreleased material, and the sole remaining finished song from the never completed final MCR album.

The album is due for release on March 25 - a year after the band split - and will also include the Attic Demos, which preceded the band's debut I Brought You My Bullets...

See the band's official announcement:

"Hello all,

On March 25, we will be releasing a greatest hits album entitled "May Death Never Stop You." The title is fitting, because as sad as it was to say goodbye to the band, we look at this collection as a celebration of our best songs, and hope the memory of them continues to bring joy to you all as they have for us.

The album also includes some previously unreleased material, including the infamous "Attic Demos," and one of the last songs we worked on in the studio together.

On January 21, we will be opening pre-orders for the album right here on our site. We hope you take the journey with us into MCR's past, and enjoy the small taste of what might have been.

Thanks,
Ray, Gerard, Frank, Mike"

NEWS: Gerard Way Talks My Chemical Romance Split: “All The Joy Was Gone”

Footage has surfaced of ex-My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way at Sydney’s Graphic Festival last month, opening up about the demise of the band and MCR5, the outfit’s fifth album that never happened, admitting that “all the joy was gone”.

The 36-year-old vocalist said he had in fact been finished with the band after the release of their smash album The Black Parade, but was unable to admit it to himself. “Paralysis comes from not being in line for what’s true for you and by the end of Black Parade I had in fact said everything I wanted to say.”

Way then goes on to explain that the music he tried to make prior became increasingly angrier and darker:

“I started to work on a record that was a concept record about a group of parents in a support group because they had all lost their children in a horrible way and that was supposed to be the last record. And that’s not a story I wanted to tell.”

Audio of Way performing a post-MCR song, entitled Millons, also found its way online after the event, which took place at Sydney Opera House on Saturday, 5th October, with the singer having previously posted the lyrics to the track online.

NEWS: Gerard Way lists Tarzana home for sale

Gerard Way, who was the lead singer-songwriter for My Chemical Romance, and his wife, Lyn-Z, bass player for Mindless Self Indulgence, have put their Tarzana home on the market at $1.899 million.

The Tudor-style home, built in 1980, features leaded glass windows, vaulted beamed ceilings and half-timbered exteriors. The 4,803 square feet of interior space includes a formal entry, an office, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The more-than-half-an-acre lot has a swimming pool with a spa and an outdoor barbecue area.

Way, 36, co-founded the alt rock band My Chemical Romance in 2001. It disbanded earlier this year. He also is a comic book writer.

His brother, Mike Way, bassist for My Chemical Romance, also put his Tarzana home up for sale at $1.489 million. The 3,915-square-foot house, built in 1956, features high ceilings, a wet bar, four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It too has a swimming pool and barbecue area, as well as an orchard and a fire pit.

Gwen Banta of Sotheby’s International Realty has both listings.

NEWS: My Chemical Romance to release Greatest Hits album in January

This morning, a listing was unearthed from the release calendar of Hits Daily Double claiming My Chemical Romance, who disbanded in March, would have a new release out in January, 2014.

Even with the caveat that this could most likely be nothing more than a singles compilation,
fan hopes immediately ran wild. So, we reached out to the band’s camp for further information in hopes of diminishing the rumors stirred by the vague listing.

Now, former MCR frontman Gerard Way has addressed the rumors, stating, "The release is a Greatest Hits Warner Bros is putting out."

REVIEW: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #4

Most great comics have an “oh, crap” moment (as I emphasized in my column about Sci-Fi scope). Sometimes it takes a few issues. Sometimes it’s right there on page one. KILLJOYS #4 waits to give you that gasp until the last BLI advertisement page—a world-building series of fake ads and public service announcements that serve to indicate just how massively influential this “Better Living Industries” has become.

No spoilers on what the “gasp” moment is—although it could be argued that the issue contains several of them, as the corporate monsters seem to gain the upper hand, both in Battery City and in the colorful world of masked outlaws. Androids Blue and Red are headed outside the city, beyond the limits of their batteries. Korse, once a mindless BLI drone, is made vulnerable by having a lover. The Girl puts on a fake punk persona to ride with Val Velocity only to wake up in the middle of the night and find out that he’s off to kill… well, someone important.

The themes are obvious: you’ve got gung-ho hero wannabes so obsessed with being “cool” that they forget what the legendary Killjoys ever stood for. You’ve got a creepy mob mentality, and all the danger that brings. And you’ve got the case of a tie-in record (My Chemical Romance’s DANGER DAYS) that actually adds to the reading experience—because when the DJ’s classic monologue comes back in the pages of this comic for an emergency broadcast, it’s pretty goddamn exciting if you recognize it.

This is not a perfect or transcendent story, but it is a wholly resonant one. The kind of story you want to tell your kids, because the symbols are so glaring and its flawed protagonists are so overdrawn. It’s a paradigm of many comics that have come before it—yet so distilled and perfectly rendered that you can’t fault any of the creators for treading down old paths.

“Batteries don’t bleed and robots don’t cry. It’s a better way. A safer way.” This is a sentiment expressed many times in the pages of literary excellence: 1984, BRAVE NEW WORLD, NEUROMANCER. Good science fiction gives us this android vs. humanoid conflict, and KILLJOYS does so in turn, blasting you with its bold colors, misguided revolutionaries, and poetic DJ beat poetry. It’s not something you’ve never read before, but it’s better than anything you have recently.

REVIEW: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #4

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys has been, from its very first issue, a wildly ambitious undertaking. With references ranging from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World to Blade Runner (and, separately, Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), the series set itself up to be either a colossal misstep or a roaring narrative success. While issue #4 is not without its flaws, the creative team of Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan do right by their spiritual source material by producing one of the best issues in the series so far.

There's a lot happening in the fourth issue of Killjoys, and most of it is executed with an impressive amount of panache. At the heart of the book is an ongoing war of ideas. On one side, we have The Girl, the lost soul who is positioned as both an Everyman and a savior, fighting to keep alive the mission of the original Killjoys as Val takes his gang of outlaws down an increasingly chaotic route. Then there's the renegade star-crossed pornbots, Blue and Red, who are racing against the clock to find peace together, even if their only option is death. And lastly, we have Korse, a BLI drone who's been infected with the worst plague of all: love. All of these stories are held together by the same questions: What is it that makes us people instead of machines? What does it mean to feel in an unfeeling world? What does it mean to be free?

These are all heavy philosophical questions, and Way, Simon, and Cloonan carry them on their backs as though they were weightless. Bigger picture concerns are handled more deftly than some of the plot's finer details, but overall, it's a stellar issue that is both thought-provoking and engaging.

REVIEW: Live From The Comic Shop: King’s Watch, Brain Boy, Eternal Warrior, Ballistic, Liberator, Killjoys

"Any week with an issue of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is a good week. Now at Issue #4, the series is written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon, with art by Becky Cloonan, colors by Dan Jackson, and letters once again by the ineffable Mark Piekos of Blambot. The experience of the comic is dictated by each member of this team in such a pronounced way that it’s hard to think of Killjoys existing without the contribution of each. Cloonan’s inks have that slightly savage quality that melts into a calligraphic grace which works so well in action as well as dialogue scenes and pops so memorably against Jackson’s always edgy colors. The ongoing drama between pornbots Red and Blue keeps up the emotional pitch of the issue, and reminds us that the comic is as much about big storytelling as being emotionally engaging. This series more than many is so firmly about characters that it hits those emotional notes on a regular basis. The girl is now “New Girl” with a resistance makeover, but she’s up against some crises of conscience when it comes to Val’s behavior, and this suggests that she’s going to continue to be the questioning conscience on the book. At what point does a brutal environment create only brutality rather than heroism? Unfortunately, “New Girl” has some very tricky and convoluted claims to sift through that may make or break her future as a resistance member. Never a dull moment with Killjoys."

REVIEW: 'THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS #3

Gerard Way and Shaun Simon’s third “Killjoys” chapter fleshes out the world and moves the narrative in a cool new direction. Cloonan’s art continues to be the biggest draw of this fantastically imaginative series.

WRITTEN BY: Gerard Way & Shaun Simon
ART BY: Becky Cloonan
PUBLISHER: Dark Horse
PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE: August 14, 2013

The issue begins with an innocent enough beat. Things become abundantly clear that major conflict is on the horizon. The girl is being primed for her fate in the conflict. The air of mystery is thickened and the world gets deeper.

“Killjoys” is a fantastic read. The script has a very lyrical feel thanks to Way and Simon. The dialogue pops off the page and filled with youthful energy. Every time one of the teenagers living off the wasteland speaks you feel a spark course through you. The dialogue is that good.

ARTICLE: Gerard Way To Release Details About Next Project

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way plans to release details about his next project some time next week. The singer and artist tweeted, “I’m hoping next week I can tell you what I’m up to next, well, like part of it…”

Way hasn’t disclosed many details about what his upcoming venture might be, but has stated in the past that he plans on taking a rest from comic book writing. He’s also described the project as being something “connected deeply to what I was before I started My Chemical Romance.”

If the project does indeed turn out to be music, it is unlikely that it will be a solo album. Way once told Alternative Press that he doesn’t see a solo album in the near future, saying “I’ve never seen myself as a solo guy…I’d have to be a lot older and I’d need a lot more life experience. So I don’t feel like doing that. It just doesn’t feel right.”

Way posted a new song under the name “DannyTheStreet” on his personal SoundCloud page seven months back. There have been no follow-up songs as yet and few details were released about the original track entitled Zero Zero.

NEWS: Gerard posts new lyrics

So I'll just put them here-

*note-
This is a song about a group of jewel thieves.
Everything is fine,
then everything goes horribly wrong.

Millions

You twist my arm
I’m twisting fate
You’ll leave alone, or crazy great
Or break into a million pieces, all your reasons

Lets live alone
And out of state
Lets make up everything and wake up breathing
Don’t give a damn about the wreck you leave in

You can use my friends, but that depends-

On what their for
And while we’re laying on the floor
My mouth is sore
I’m keeping score
A million reasons but I need a million more

You believe in love
I believe in faith
They’ll believe in anything, you make up villains
A trillion legions of the damned and William,
It was really me
It was really you
There was really nothing I could do
Until then,
Lets use our magic powers with the children

You don’t understand, we don’t hold hands

Come catch me, run
Cuz I’m not having any fun
I think you’re sore
I think I’m done
A million reasons

Can I be your number one?

Yeah. Yeah.

ARTICLE: An Exclusive Conversation With Gerard Way & Friends, Part One

An interview with Gerard Way and Killjoys collaborators Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan about life, the future and the past.

As issue two of The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys is released, we thought it was time to catch up with author and My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, as well as writer Shaun Simon and artist Becky Cloonan. This is part of a series of articles published to celebrate the ongoing Killjoys series, with the main interview in this month's issue of Rock Sound, and the second part of this feature landing online on July 31.

Where does this release fit into the My Chemical Romance timeline?
Gerard: “The end of My Chem was the end. This was always intended to come out, maybe not the way it was originally written, but that’s just the case with everything. This is exactly what it was supposed to be. Anything in there that is relevant to the birth or ending of anything is not intentional. It’s the beginning of an awesome comic book career for Shaun, for Becky it’ll be a continuation of an awesome career. For me, it’s gonna be me stepping away from comics. So it’s beginnings and endings in a lot of ways.”

ARTICLE: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys #2

The first issue of Killjoys was a stylistic mess that featured few cohesive elements of an actual story. This second issue of the series has barely any, and introduces a large cast of characters that writer Gerard Way will not have enough time to completely develop over the next couple issues of this series. This slightly belligerent, yet beautifully drawn mess is what the reader has is left to decipher towards the end of the comic book.

Years ago, the Killjoys fought against the tyrannical megacorporation Better Living Industries, costing them their lives, save for one—the mysterious Girl. Today, the followers of the original Killjoys languish in the Desert while BLI systematically strips citizens of their individuality. As the fight for freedom fades, it’s left to the Girl to take up the mantle and bring down the fearsome BLI or else join the mindless ranks of Bat City!

Way’s first foray into comics, known as The Umbrella Academy featured a great twist on the X-Men as the notion of a family. Anybody that read the series was not expecting a work so nuanced and character driven from a musician. The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoy’s would be something that many would expect from the rockstar. The point is that this effort is so strangely underwhelming when compared to the former series in his career.

This comic loosely revolves around a girl without a name, reaching out to the Killjoys. The group in question are people that died in the music videos from the My Chemical Romance band. The series is so deeply tied into that mythology that it is simply content with setting up an atmosphere. While in comics the surroundings in which the story takes place are no doubt important, there also needs to be a story and character within these pages.

This project has a lot of potential if Gerard Way could just start the story already and focus on the characters that are previously setup. This issue is once again drawn beautifully by the wonderful Becky Cloonan.

2/5 STARS
