ARTICLE: A Conversation With Gerard Way About His New Series Killjoys, Comics and Integrity

The best storytellers carry their ideas in the brain like a burden. It's not a manner of wanting to tell a story, it's a need. Like most of us, Gerard has a day-job that usually keeps him fairly busy but his desire to tell stories never goes away and he sticks with them even years later.

ARTICLE: The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys Launches in June 2013

In 2009, when Dark Horse first announced a new project from Grammy-nominated frontman turned Eisner-winning comics writer Gerard Way (The Umbrella Academy), the response from music and comics fans alike was overwhelming. Now, Dark Horse is thrilled to announce that Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan’s highly anticipated sci-fi epic will finally see publication in 2013!

Welcome to Battery City, where the disease is the cure!

In My Chemical Romance’s critically acclaimed album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, the Killjoys fought against the tyrannical megacorporation Better Living Industries. It cost them their lives, save for one—the mysterious Girl. Today, the followers of the original Killjoys languish in the desert while BLI systematically strips citizens of their individuality. As the fight for freedom fades, it’s left to the Girl to take up the mantle and bring down the fearsome BLI or else join the mindless ranks of Bat City!

“The original idea for the comic informed the record,” said Gerard Way. “The record helped refine the idea, and then Becky had done a drawing of the Girl for the single ‘The Only Hope for Me Is You’ and I saw it and thought, this is the comic. It’s basically the last video, it’s the last part of the Killjoys story, while at the same time being totally its own thing.”

“I think we have created a broad range of characters here,” said cowriter Shaun Simon. “A lonely teenage girl hiding from her past in the desert. A couple of android call girls wanting nothing more than to be together. An aging assassin with a secret that could destroy his life . . . Even though these characters are living in a bizarre sci-fi world, their struggles are the same we face in our own.”

“The world of the Killjoys is full of visual opposites—from sprawling deserts to urban junkyards—and a cast of characters to match,” said artist Becky Cloonan. “It’s been a challenge to encompass all of this in my art, but woven into the world building is a human spark that lights this story on fire and gives me so much to draw from.”

As announced at New York Comic Con, an early look into this world will be published as part of Free Comic Book Day 2013, with the first issue hitting stands the following month on June 6!

ARTICLE: Gerard Way And Scott Allie On 'Killjoys' And The Future Of ' The Umbrella Academy'

Even though it's been more than three years since the last issue of the second volume of The Umbrella Academy, the sci-fi family saga illustrated by Gabriel Bá is never far from writer Gerard Way's mind. The My Chemical Romance frontman just got a little busy between starting a family, touring the world, and releasing Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and working on its similarly-titled comic with Shaun Simon, Becky Cloonan and Dave Stewart. Finding himself with a moment to catch his breath, Way traveled to Portland, Oregon last week to work on the latest chapter of the UA saga, Hotel Oblivion, with his longtime editor and current Editor-in-Chief of Dark Horse Comics, Scott Allie. Way and Allie took a break from planning the future of the Hargreeves children to catch ComicsAlliance up on where The Umbrella Academy is headed, and what fans can expect from the Killjoys comic when it debuts this summer.

ComicsAlliance: It's been a couple years, there's been kind of an extended wait for the newest book - and it's still [called] "Hotel Oblivion," right?

Gerard Way:
Yeah, it is.

CA: Can you kind of catch me up the timeline from the initial teaser announcement a couple of years ago to now?

GW:
I think that right away I pretty much knew what I wanted series three to be about, and I knew it was going to be about this hotel that [Sir Reginald] Hargreeves had built to keep everybody that [The Umbrella Academy] encountered who were extremely dangerous - he built this hotel to keep them in this kind of pocket dimension. So I knew that right away, and I had this image in my head that I talked to Gabriel [Bá] about drawing and I said, "This is definitely what it's going to look like." It's a hotel a lot like this one. It's some old hotel. Then he created that image and I think we thought we were going to get it going a lot sooner than we have.

ARTCLE: My Chemical Romance's "Helena" Tops List of Best Emo Songs of All Time

What’s the worst that we can say? No. 1 in our emo countdown isn’t about a jilted lover’s broken-hearted Swiss army romance but two band members’ late grandmother. New Jersey’s much-maligned My Chemical Romance are crowned king of this list via this epic and indispensible 2005 single off Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, landing in the Top 10 of nearly all our contributors. Its glory rises at the first swipe of smeared guyliner: the incredible music video’s funeral scene and dance choreography was a saturation point for mainstream emo culture. Gerard Way mirrored a generation through aesthetic and attitude, and this prime example of the aughts Hot Topic-ization of rock and roll is mitigated by the fact that MCR were only trying to write their own “Aces High” by Iron Maiden. So long, and goodnight.

ARTICLE: The Danger Days of My Chemical Romance

Epiphone's My Chemical Romance have sold out of their Conventional Weapons box set featuring 10 recently released songs from 2008. But the individual singles are still available.  Frank Iero wrote about the sessions on MCR's website:

"After almost a year of beating ourselves up, we ended up shelving those ill-fated songs, and reconnected with Rob Cavallo and Doug McKean to salvage our band and make what would become Danger Days.

To kill the misconception, I don't think the songs we wrote before Danger Days are bad songs by any means. In fact, I kinda think some of them are among my favorites we have ever written. A lot of them are kinda (expletive) rad....they just so happened to have been created in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and we as their parents were not ready to raise them just yet...and so they sat and waited."

The next two songs from Danger Days will be released November 23, "Black Friday," which will be an especially good day for vinyl collectors. Independent music stores will be chock full of goodies including Gary Clark Jr., the Rolling Stones, and MCR.  Look for the rest of the songs in mid December, early January, and early February.

When that's all done and dusted, Frank Iero and the fellows will be releasing a brand new album. Check out our exclusive interview with Frank.  And if you haven't already, pick up a Phant-o-matic, one of the coolest guitars out there (and a great deal, too) featuring Alnico Classic™ humbuckers, a VariTone™ and Wilkinson™ vintage style with green keys.  Approved by Frank and designed by Frank.

VIDEO: Gerard Way Talks Next Album

At New York Comic Con 2012 while promoting his forthcoming illustrated novel True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, Artisan News asked Gerard Way about the next My Chemical Romance album.

Oct 16, 2012

REVIEW [excerpt]: **WARNING - NEGATIVE CONTENT*** Album Title Goes Here — DeadMau5

"...Zimmerman dusts off My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way for the faux indie-rocker “Professional Griefers,” which features an over-compressed indie rock riff that is reminiscent of a neutered Franz Ferdinand track. It’s been a while since the heyday of My Chemical Romance, and Way puts in a valiant effort on this track. “Just give me a life to bleed/Another world outside that’s full of/All the awful things that I made,” he sings with the same earnestness he displayed while his band was still popular.

Unfortunately for Zimmerman, the combination of these lyrics and Way’s cameo makes “Professional Griefers” wholly entertaining to anyone who hates My Chemical Romance. Perhaps the song is actually a latent manifestation of Zimmerman’s fears of irrelevancy."

"...Eventually, Deadmau5’ Album Title Goes Here starts to feel like a painfully oblivious victory lap. But hey, if you’re on top of the world why change a thing? Unfortunately, it seems that this mentality didn’t work out too well for Gerard Way."

VIDEO: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE GERARD WAY TALK COMIC CON 2012 ANNOUNCEMENT FOR KILLJOYS

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way along with partners Becky Cloonan and Shaun Simon signed for fans at New York Comic Con 2012 over the weekend and exclusively told Artisan News when fans can get a hold of the first illustrated novel True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys.

NEWS: Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan reveal Killjoys details at New York Comic Con

Though we were once told that Killjoys began as a project stemming from authors Shaun Simon and Gerard Way "growing up being in the van," much has changed since its inception.

A far cry from the '90s-inspired, American comic-book feel they had originally intended, the Killjoys of now, according to Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan in an interview with Newsarama that was streamed live, is more inspired by the Killjoys world MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE created with their videos for Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys.

According to Way, it is "basically the 3rd" Killjoys video they would have made had they not run out of money, and it's an "expansion on the record."

When Way received a sketch from Cloonan of "The Girl" in the Danger Days videos, grown up (well, somewhat, she was 16), he told Simon, "I think this is the comic."

Cloonan noted that she saw how many people had put their hearts into the Killjoys world as MCR created, and that she creates the world with that in mind!

ARTICLE: Way, Simon and Cloonan’s Killjoys comic ‘finally happening’

My Chemical Romance’s The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys album may have come and gone, but the Killjoys comic first announced in 2009 has yet to see the light of day. According to a post from Killjoys artist Becky Cloonan, it looks like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for the long-delayed project.

“So this is finally happening!” she posted on her tumblr site. “If you’ll be at NYCC, come to Dark Horse’s Killjoy panel, Saturday at 5PM. I’ll be there along with writers Gerard Way and Shaun Simon! Beyond psyched.”

According to Dark Horse’s signing schedule, they’ll hold a ticketed event with the three creators at the Dark Horse booth. Cloonan said at CCI this past July that the book was back on track, and it looks like we might be getting official word about it in New York.

Back when it was first announced, Way said the series would be more mature than his work on Umbrella Academy.

“If ‘Umbrella Academy’ is me taking a look at, among many other things, ‘Doom Patrol,’ ‘Killjoys’ is me, with my co-writer Shaun Simon, taking a look at when the best stuff was going on in the ’90s, things like ‘Invisibles’ and stuff like that,” he told CBR. “It’s a mature readers title, which is another first. We specifically wanted ‘Umbrella Academy’ to be an all ages title. This thing is going to deal with much more mature and controversial themes, such as hate crimes and homophobia, the homogenization of American culture and American life. ‘Umbrella Academy’ is set in its own world, with its own rules; ‘Killjoys’ is set in modern America. I find that sometimes you can say a lot when you’re dealing in our times, with what people can relate with right now. It starts off at the end of the ’90s and picks up today. I would say it’s more violent, heavily, and deals with much stronger themes.”

ARTICLE: Frank Iero - The Interview

My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero is not only one of our signature artists but he's also one of our favorite interviewees. Frank loves to talk about guitars and music and his enthusiasm for his craft is always abundantly clear. The Epiphone Frank Iero Phant-o-matic was released last year to great reviews. Frank and his mates from MCR have been hard at work in their studio in Los Angeles on a new album for 2013.

My Chemical Romance also recently announced that starting in October, the band plans to release 2 unheard songs every month through March, 2013. The tracks were recorded just prior to the release of their last album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, and are known among hardcore MCR fans as the Conventional Weapons sessions. "We hope you enjoy these time capsules, and that they may shed a little more light on how and where Danger Days came from, and maybe even where the future of MCR might be heading. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...and now it is finally time to lift the veil on Conventional Weapons," Frank announced on the official website. Epiphone caught up with Frank to get the full scoop on what he's been up to.
