NEWS: Comic-Con 2016: Gerard Way recalls being 'really scared' to pitch Doom Patrol ideas

The My Chemical Romance frontman talks about his 'lifelong dream' at Con-X

With My Chemical Romance still in hibernation, former frontman Gerard Way has pivoted toward an early love: comics.

Last April, Way announced he would curate a new DC effort targeted toward older readers called Young Animal. The first of the four titles will roll out this fall, kick-starting the imprint of which Way will write “two-and-a-half.” He also wrote the alt-universe Eisner-winning limited series, The Umbrella Academy, that Universal Cable Production optioned last year for a series.

Way joined EW’s Tim Leong at the EW Con-X stage to discuss his own imprint, the scariest moment of adapting Doom Patrol, female creators, and the music that inspires his writing. Here are our takeaways.

Landing an imprint wasn’t on Way’s radar
Leong described Way’s accomplishment akin to an athlete nabbing a personalized sneaker from Nike. But it might be even bigger than that, given the autonomy and guidance as a curator.

“It all stemmed out of Doom Patrol and the desire to write Doom Patrol, which had been my lifelong dream, between making music and writing Doom Patrol — that was pretty much what I had,” Way explained of how Young Animal came to be.

He started out by going through the DC canon and picking out rarely used characters: “My favorite characters are the ones that are counted out already, maybe they’re B-lister, C-lister characters. I find you can do the most exciting things with those kinds of characters.”

Four titles are being developed under his creative guidance, three with some writing contribution from Way: Doom Patrol, Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye, and Mother Panic. (Cecil Castellucci handles writing duties on Shade, The Changing Girl.)

Many primary characters are daughters — and not just because Way has one

Way noted the strong parental-daughter relationships in the four in-progress works, but he claims, “It just happened.”

“A lot of the characters, the lead characters are women,” he said, “and I think that has something to do with the parent-daughter, parent-child situation.”

Way noted how critical it is to have female and varied creators aboard his projects: “Moving forward, it’s more important to have more kinds of diversity in there. Just to keep an eye on it: You should try to include people whenever you can.”

Writing Doom Patrol was a horrifying dream come true

Way’s one comic he wishes he could have written is Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol. Since he’s now working on it, everything is extra special. But the scariest moment about taking on Doom Patrol was working over ideas in Morrison’s Los Angeles apartment and pitching ideas, in front of the man himself.

“He would be like, ‘Okay, what’s your first issue of Doom Patrol?’” he recalled, “and I would have to stand there and tell him everything. I was really scared. That’s when I realized there’s a lot of holes in this cheese. I got to figure it out.”

The intense grilling wasn’t a hazing process: Morrison has given his blessing and endorsement to Way to take on Doom Patrol.

Don’t listen to MCR when trying to write

To begin his writing process, Way typically threw on Black Sabbath, Sleep or ethereal instrumental tracks to help with Doom Patrol; one album usually puts him into a writing zone that propels him. But he doubts anyone could listen to anything MCR to center them.

“I couldn’t imagine writing anything while listening to that,” Way said. “It’s just constantly hitting you in the face with that band. It really grabs the listener and says, ‘You must listen to me right now.’”

Con-X is a four-day getaway in Embarcadero Marina Park North in downtown San Diego. Made for all fans, Con-X allows anyone to get a taste of Comic-Con for free with panels, Q&A, trivia, music, screenings and more. Con-X runs through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. PT each day.

NEWS: My Chemical Romance Plots 'Black Parade' Reissue for 10th Anniversary

Band confirms no tour or reunion plans will accompany reissue

My Chemical Romance will be reissuing their third album The Black Parade for its 10th anniversary. The band confirmed on Twitter, however, that the reissue is not indicative of any tour or reunion plans.

A source confirmed the reissue to Entertainment Weekly after a cryptic teaser video was posted on the band's social media yesterday with a flag bearing a cross waved in the wind as the opening piano part to "Welcome to the Black Parade" played. The video also revealed a release date for the then-mystery project of September 23rd. As fans raced to guess what the teaser indicated, the band posted a note on their Twitter with the caption "Thank you so much for the love" that confirmed they would not be reuniting this year.

My Chemical Romance released the theatrical Black Parade in October of 2006. The rock opera told the story of a cancer patient who experiences his death in the form of a parade and continues to reflect on his existence in the afterlife. "Welcome to the Black Parade" was the band's first and only Top 10 single and the album itself went platinum, establishing MCR as one of the biggest rock bands at the time.

In 2013, the band decided to call it quits after 12 years and four albums together. Their final release was 2010's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, and even though Danger Days was not technically a rock opera it still maintained the band's penchant for a theme with the protopunk-influenced songs loosely telling the tale of the Killjoys fighting against a deadly corporation.

NEWS: My Chemical Romance Tease Reunion Three Years After Breakup

Something is coming this September ...

My Chemical Romance’s breakup in 2013 might turn out to be more of a hiatus. The emo band seem to be hinting at a reunion: Earlier today, they tweeted a 30-second video of a flag with the group’s insignia and revealing the date 9/23/16. This was their first tweet in more than a year.

Whether that’s the release date for a new album, song, tour, or something else remains to be seen. If it is an LP, it will be My Chemical Romance’s first since 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Details are still sparse, but it looks like things, in fact, are now okay for the future of the band. Watch the teaser below.

You can all finally stop asking – Gerard Way is heading back to San Diego Comic-Con this year.
We’ve confirmed with DC Entertainment that Way is indeed returning to San Diego Comic-Con this year. He’ll be at a panel (details still to come) to discuss his new pop-up imprint, DC’s Young Animal, along with Cecil Castelucci (Shade, The Changing Girl) and Jody Houser (Mother Panic).

NEWS (04/01/16): Rumor: Could Gerard Way Become The Figurehead Behind DC’s Vertigo Line?

Although DC made the majority of the big Rebirth announcements at WonderCon last weekend, rumor has it they are still holding one of their bigger ones for the upcoming Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. It seems My Chemical Romance singer (and Umbrella Academy writer) Gerard Way is being tapped by DC Vertigo into what’s being described as “a kind of showrunner/curator position” over a number of titles.

According to the rumor, his position is said to be described as “Not quite an editor, but not just a figurehead either.” Vertigo has not had a breakout hit in many years, arguably since Fables. Could this be just the thing that Vertigo needs? And could the long rumored relaunch of Doom Patrol from Way and Becky Cloonan be leading the pack? Hopefully we’ll know more soon.

NEWS (03/07/16): Gerard Way is Joining Echosmith in the Studio

The "Cool Kids" stars just invited a very Cool Kid to collaborate

Here's some fun, unexpected news: Echosmith and Gerard Way are hitting the studio together, according to a pair of excited tweets.

Echosmith shared the good news on Saturday night (Mar. 5), noting that the collaboration with the former My Chemical Romance frontman would happen "this week":

Way might just be producing for the pop-rock sibling quartet, which scored a Top 20 hit in 2014 with "Cool Kids," but let's hope that a duet with singer Sydney Sierota materializes. Presumably, the collaboration will appear on Echosmith's follow-up to its 2013 debut, Talking Dreams. Way, who wrapped up his Hesitant Alien tour last fall, has been relatively quiet on the new music front.
