NEWS: Gerard Way’s Fabulous Killjoys gets Free Comic Book Day debut

Following Thursday’s announcement of the gold titles for Free Comic Book Day 2013, Dark Horse has revealed the rest of its lineup, which includes the long-awaited debut of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, by Gerard Way, co-writer Shaun Simon, artist Becky Cloonan and colorist Dave Stewart.

Announced in 2009, the follow-up to the acclaimed Umbrella Academy originally was described by the frontman of My Chemical Romance as “almost like a strange kind of love letter to the really great comics of the ’90s that kind of pushed things.” However, in the three years since the announcement, a lot changed.

“The comic idea informed the record [2010's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys],” he told CBR TV this year at New York Comic Con. “And then during the record it kind of helped refine the idea, and then it was like, ‘All right, cool, this is what it is.’ Really, Becky had done this drawing for a single  — for ‘The Only Hope For Me is You’  — and it was a drawing of the girl … and I saw it and I was like, ‘I think this is comic.’ And it literally changed that day. I called Shaun and we changed the whole thing. The comic is basically the last video, it’s the last part of the story. [...] It’s really its own thing now. It actually feels like a [Hayao] Miyazaki film. The pacing is actually not as frantic as what people are going to expect. It’s paced very well, and it’s paced kind of moderately. There’s basically three stories going on at once, so it’s not like Umbrella where — you know, a team book or something — we’re doing this thing where you have to tell three stories that basically converge, with three separate locations, basically.”

Killjoys will share a flip book with R.I.P.D., joining a Dark Horse FCBD lineup that includes Star Wars/Avatar: The Last Airbender (with a preview of Captain Midnight), and Mass Effect. Free Comic Book Day is May 4, 2013.
