ARTICLE: A Conversation With Gerard Way About His New Series Killjoys, Comics and Integrity
The best storytellers carry their ideas in the brain like a burden.
It's not a manner of wanting to tell a story, it's a need. Like most of
us, Gerard has a day-job that usually keeps him fairly busy but his
desire to tell stories never goes away and he sticks with them even
years later.

ARTICLE: The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys Launches in June 2013
In 2009, when Dark Horse first announced a new project from
Grammy-nominated frontman turned Eisner-winning comics writer Gerard Way
(The Umbrella Academy), the response from music and comics
fans alike was overwhelming. Now, Dark Horse is thrilled to announce
that Gerard Way, Shaun Simon, and Becky Cloonan’s highly anticipated
sci-fi epic will finally see publication in 2013!
Welcome to Battery City, where the disease is the cure!
In My Chemical Romance’s critically acclaimed album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, the Killjoys fought against the tyrannical megacorporation Better Living Industries. It cost them their lives, save for one—the mysterious Girl. Today, the followers of the original Killjoys languish in the desert while BLI systematically strips citizens of their individuality. As the fight for freedom fades, it’s left to the Girl to take up the mantle and bring down the fearsome BLI or else join the mindless ranks of Bat City!
“The original idea for the comic informed the record,” said Gerard Way. “The record helped refine the idea, and then Becky had done a drawing of the Girl for the single ‘The Only Hope for Me Is You’ and I saw it and thought, this is the comic. It’s basically the last video, it’s the last part of the Killjoys story, while at the same time being totally its own thing.”
“I think we have created a broad range of characters here,” said cowriter Shaun Simon. “A lonely teenage girl hiding from her past in the desert. A couple of android call girls wanting nothing more than to be together. An aging assassin with a secret that could destroy his life . . . Even though these characters are living in a bizarre sci-fi world, their struggles are the same we face in our own.”
“The world of the Killjoys is full of visual opposites—from sprawling deserts to urban junkyards—and a cast of characters to match,” said artist Becky Cloonan. “It’s been a challenge to encompass all of this in my art, but woven into the world building is a human spark that lights this story on fire and gives me so much to draw from.”
As announced at New York Comic Con, an early look into this world will be published as part of Free Comic Book Day 2013, with the first issue hitting stands the following month on June 6!

ARTICLE: Gerard Way And Scott Allie On 'Killjoys' And The Future Of ' The Umbrella Academy'
Even though it's been more than three years since the last issue of the second volume of The Umbrella Academy,
the sci-fi family saga illustrated by Gabriel Bá is never far from
writer Gerard Way's mind. The My Chemical Romance frontman just got a
little busy between starting a family, touring the world, and releasing Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys
and working on its similarly-titled comic with Shaun Simon, Becky
Cloonan and Dave Stewart. Finding himself with a moment to catch his
breath, Way traveled to Portland, Oregon last week to work on the latest
chapter of the UA saga, Hotel Oblivion, with his longtime
editor and current Editor-in-Chief of Dark Horse Comics, Scott Allie.
Way and Allie took a break from planning the future of the Hargreeves
children to catch ComicsAlliance up on where The Umbrella Academy is headed, and what fans can expect from the Killjoys comic when it debuts this summer.
ComicsAlliance: It's been a couple years, there's been kind of an extended wait for the newest book - and it's still [called] "Hotel Oblivion," right?
Gerard Way: Yeah, it is.
CA: Can you kind of catch me up the timeline from the initial teaser announcement a couple of years ago to now?
GW: I think that right away I pretty much knew what I wanted series three to be about, and I knew it was going to be about this hotel that [Sir Reginald] Hargreeves had built to keep everybody that [The Umbrella Academy] encountered who were extremely dangerous - he built this hotel to keep them in this kind of pocket dimension. So I knew that right away, and I had this image in my head that I talked to Gabriel [Bá] about drawing and I said, "This is definitely what it's going to look like." It's a hotel a lot like this one. It's some old hotel. Then he created that image and I think we thought we were going to get it going a lot sooner than we have.

ARTCLE: My Chemical Romance's "Helena" Tops List of Best Emo Songs of All Time
What’s the worst that we can say? No. 1 in our emo countdown isn’t about
a jilted lover’s broken-hearted Swiss army romance but two band
members’ late grandmother. New Jersey’s much-maligned My Chemical
Romance are crowned king of this list via this epic and indispensible
2005 single off Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, landing in the Top 10 of
nearly all our contributors. Its glory rises at the first swipe of
smeared guyliner: the incredible music video’s funeral scene and dance
choreography was a saturation point for mainstream emo culture. Gerard
Way mirrored a generation through aesthetic and attitude, and this prime
example of the aughts Hot Topic-ization of rock and roll is mitigated
by the fact that MCR were only trying to write their own “Aces High” by
Iron Maiden. So long, and goodnight.
